Beyond 23 Things: 100 Tools in 100 Minutes

Following on the popularity of SLA's "23 Things", DC/SLA will present a series of 4 programs entitled "Beyond 23 Things: 100 Tools in 100 Minutes" that will feature innovative web-based resources for librarians. Pack your lunch and join your colleagues at the National Geographic Society for the February review of the first 25 sites, and look forward to learning about the remaining 75 sites on April 3rd (featuring Stephen Abram), September (TBD) and November (TBD) at other locales. For those who can't attend in person, these programs will be available online via WebEx.

The Future of the Federal Government

The Washington D.C. Chapter of the Special Libraries Association, in partnership with Leadership Directories, invites you to a special Future of Government Seminar & Reception this March at the University Club of Washington D.C.
The event will feature speakers Jonathan Breul, Executive Director of the IBM Center for the Business of Government, and Michael Keegan, producer of The Business of Government Hour and Managing Editor of The Business of Government Magazine. Breul and Keegan will outline the mission and work of the Center, and highlight the 10 challenges facing Public Managers.
The IBM Center for The Business of Government connects public management research with practice. Since 1998, they have helped public sector executives improve the effectiveness of government with practical ideas and original thinking.

Swing Dance and Book Drive

Come celebrate the SLA Centennial with the DC Chapter on Tuesday, April 7th from 6-9pm at our WWII-Era Swing Dance complete with a live swing band, swing demonstrations, and some participants dressed in period attire. Proceeds from this event will send audio books (PlayAways - playawaydigital.com) to soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. This event is being held at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town in Alexandria, VA in conjunction with the DTIC Annual Conference - conference attendance is not required and this dance will be a separate fee from the conference registration.

"Open Source ILS: Ready for Prime Time?"

Speaker: Patrick Jones of PTFS
Abstract: Patrick will provide a review of the current state of the art of Open Source (free) Integrated Library Systems, focusing on Evergreen and Koha. He'll also provide insight and tips on how to evaluate and implement an Open Source ILS based upon his extensive experience in the ILS marketplace with both Federal and non-Federal libraries.
Patrick Jones has over twenty years of experience in library software solutions, information system integration, data conversion & migration, and ILS implementation management. Prior work experience includes Carnegie-Mellon University, Florida State University, University of Pittsburgh, Dynix, SirsiDynix, Endeavor, OCLC, and PTFS. Mr. Jones provides a vendor-side perspective that benefits libraries as they make library system/software selection and procurement decisions.
