8. Explore Flickr and learn about this popular image hosting site.

Estimate of time: 2 hours

Overview

Why images? There is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Considering this, you may want to:

  • integrate images into your blog upon occasion or all the time
  • let your images stand alone on a photo sharing site
  • mash them up to make something else again
  • do all of these things at once.

Benefits

What are the benefits? There are many ways to reach your audience. Some people learn through reading text, others get more out of a photo or video. A mix of both can enhance a blog, wiki, or website.

Getting started on Flickr

  1. Set up your free account on Flickr (You can use your Yahoo password if you have one).

Discovery

Let the fun begin!

First, make a Flickr badge for your blog or website by visiting Flickr's create your own Flickr badge. It's pretty cool.

Visit some of these sites and try a few.

Want More?

Check out BigHugeLab's House of fd's Flickr Toys. Here you will find tools to help you make cool things from flickr such as calendars, puzzles, motivational posters, magazine covers, movie posters, badges, wallpaper, billboards, cubes, and even a Warholizer.

Find applications and plugins on Flickr Bits and Pieces, The Great Flickr Tool Collection from Quick Online Tips,

Reflections: Localize your learnings

  • You had fun didn't you? How can you use these applications to spread the fun around and enhance (or enliven) library services?
  • Does this get your creative juices going? Where does it take you?

Challenge

  • Share the fun and power of mashups by teaching a colleague, friend, or family member how to make one of their own.
  • Consider running a mashup contest with your library as the centerpiece.

10. Create a blog post about anything technology related that interests you this week.

Estimate of time:

15-60 minutes, it depends on how verbose you tend to be!

Overview

It's time to take a breath and reflect on everything you have experienced so far. Feel free to blog about any of the modules you have worked on, or any that you are looking forward to.

Benefits

You always learn more when you take some time to reflect and integrate the knowledge you have gained!

Reflections: Localize your learnings

Some ideas for possible blog posts. Please feel free to ignore these and write about whatever you are most interested in. The best blog entries tend to be those in which the author expresses a true interest and belief.

  • Which Web 2.0 technology have you found most challenging so far? Why?
  • Which is most likely to effect the way you do your work, or the way that you support your organization?
  • What are your thoughts on the longevity of these products? Are they here to stay or just a flash in the pan?

Challenge

See what others are saying and begin a conversation! Visit at least 2 other participants' blogs and leave comments on their technology-related post.

I am curious to know if you have thought of some uses of some of these photo/image technologies. Of course, they are fun and I am all about FUN, but my place of work might want me to actually use them for work purposes. Here are some things I thought of:

Flickr - have a library account and post photos of office and/or library events

Mosaic Maker / montager - spice up library marketing and event announcements

Delivr - use above Flickr account to send cards to office people - could send recall/overdue notices this way

Captioner - Good way to explain the check out process and other visual instruction type things.

    Jaye,

I use professionally in the following ways:

    1.  I search Flickr for Creative Commons license photos to use in presentations.  Photos can convey concepts more easily sometimes and they also can spice up a presentation.
    2. I post photos from events that I attend (e.g., SLA conference) and then use those photos in related blog posts, etc.  Sometimes those photos are also used by colleagues in newsletters (with my permission).
    3. I create custom name badges for events using Flickr photos and Flickr toys.  I did this for the people who worked the Upstate NY library camp, making us easily identifiable.  I've also created a cool badge for myself that I use at events (and instead of those "hi my name is" tags).
    4. I use photos on my web site and blogs.
    5. I look for photos that illustrate something...like photos of book scanners.
    6. I look for photos that show me what a place looks like.  For example, before heading on a business trip, I may look for photos of that site online.  That gives me a better idea of where I'm going.
    7. BTW I answered a question from a woman who was moving to this region by linking her to Flickr photos of the region.  She had no clue where she was moving to and those photos helped (especially the photos of the snow!).
    8. We can see what other libraries look like and think about how we might change our own libraries.  BTW there is a pool of library signage that show the good, bad and ugly of the signs we use!  Very educational.

That's what I can think of for how.  Notice that I place photos in Flickr and also search Flickr for photos that I can use.  I may not always have the photos I need, but undoubtedly I'll find photos in Flickr that will do the trick.

    Hi, Jaye.

I wanted to add one more idea about posting photos to Flickr. I use it to show management (the money gatekeepers) how crowded our Learning Commons gets at times.

Visuals are always best to share as they have more impact than words, imho.

I had the same problem with Delivr.  I was looking forward to using that tool.

Also, does anyone know how to incorporate the Flickr badge into your blog?  I tried to copy the code into a post, but it only showed as the code.  What did I miss?

For adding Flickr badge to your blog...

    • First see Flickr FAQs related to this topic: http://www.flickr.com/help/blogging/#1816 . There are two FAQs that respond to your question.
    • Next, I created my Flickr badge and copied it to Notepad for safe keeping.
    • Then I went to my Google Blogger account Just Do It >> edited my Layout (under Customization/Settings) >> added a new Gadget >> selected HTML/Javascript as my Gadget type >> pasted the Flickr HTML-based code into the box >> Previewed on Blogger >> Saved my new Gadget on my layout.

Hope this helps you and others that might have gotten stuck. Karen

It's on an honor system. 23 Things was built to be a self-pace learning experience for SLA members. It's up to you on how many "things" you want to complete. We encourage everyone to go through all the modules, but it's ultimately up to you what you decide to tackle and what you want to share from your experience. In our last module we ask that everyone complete our survey to give us feedback on their learning experiences.
