Information Professionals International (IPI)

This name, which was proposed and voted on at the annual conference in New York 2003, is definitely worthy of reconsideration.  I am convinced that the reason that it did not succeed then is that the kind of ground work that is being done now w/ the Alignment Project was not done then. In 2009 SLA members have had the opportunity in advance of the voting to see research that shows the importance of a new name that reflects who were are in the 21st century and to have a full discussion on this important topic of a name change.  Politicians as brilliant as Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama have suffered humiliating defeats at the polls before going on to be elected President of the United States.  The fact that the name did not succeed the 1st time is no reason that it should not be seriously considered again.  Information Professionals International is short, catchy, inclusive, and global.  It is who we are!

I'll add the same comment that I added to Karen Huffman's idea, which was that this is close, and "information professionals" comes the very closest to what we do, but that we somehow need to designate that we are different from IT folks. I think the word "knowledge" is ethereal and, in fact, scary to a lot of folks, so I'm inclined to go to a thesaurus and play with that  one a bit to see what we could add to the information professionals piece.
