Global Association of Library and Information Professionals (GALIP)

Name suggestion:

  • Global Association of Library and Information Professionals (GALIP)

Reasons:

  • I agree with Karen on the importance of expressing the international nature of the organization, but also think that the dual meaning of "global" (international, all-inclusive) serves our purposes well.
  • I would suggest that retaining "Library" in addition to "Information Professional" might be a good consensus position for the membership. The inspiration here is CILIP, the UK's Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

I like your suggestions, Luke. Broadens our title to a more international level + includes IP but also retains "Library" for those that want to keep the word in the title as well.

This is the best idea I've seen or heard so far. I'm only a student, but already I know that I identify with the term librarian, and I know I'm not the only one. On the other hand, I can understand the members who feel that librarian doesn't cover what they do. This is a good compromise.

I held on to the word "library" for a long time because I liked it and was proud of it. It's not that I'm no longer proud of it, but it no longer accurately describes what I do in people's minds within my organization. I haven't used it in several years now and would like the name of my professional organization to reflect the change I have needed. I think this suggested name goes a long way toward honoring multiple members' needs.

I like this one - my vote is we have some combination of (international or global) and (library and/or information and/or knowledge).  I'm a bit partial to "knowledge", having spent a lot of my career in KM and having the bias that librarians were the original and still the best knowledge managers.  I'm not at all allergic to the "L" word, however I think it needs either information or knowledge mixed in with it to update and broaden the concept.  It is time to update from SLA, which still requires explanation when talking to non-librarians.  I still laugh when I remember my father's horrified expression when I told him I had joined SLA in graduate school.  This was long enough ago his first thought was that I had joined the Symbionese Liberation Army.

I came up with a very similar idea a couple of years ago (same initials) - see my post of July 16.  I agree with many of the comments above as well.
