In recent years Social Networking has become one of the most popular forms of communication on the internet. With the popularity of site like MySpace and Facebook, many consider it to be something for "the kids." It's not! Consider it a place to connect with people, you may or may not know, promote your services, and network! Consider the different groups you can connect with:

  • Friends and family
  • People who share a common interest (like a hobby)
  • Other information professionals
  • Transportation professionals
  • Your library's users!

Some of the most popular Social Networking sites include:

Check out the different sites and think about which networks you like and why. How easy it to find people? How do you like the profile pages? Which one would you actually join?

Thing 5 has you join a social network and test it out.

  1. Join a site! Signing up is free and just requires an email address. If you're already a member of these networks, you can find another one to join or discover a new group within these networks that you were not previously aware of.
  2. Upload a picture to your profile. It doesn't have to be a picture of you, if you like. Fill out some your profile information. This gives your profile a bit of personality. People will know it's you! If you already have a profile, update some of the information.
  3. Keep playing with the social network. Find new people to connect to! Join a group!
  4. Blog about your experience or comment here.

Be sure to join the Transportation Division's groups on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Bonus! You can also use sites like Twitter and FriendFeed to connect with friends and colleagues. Why not try one of them out?
