Thing 4 - Social Bookmarking
Bookmarks are a great way to keep track of websites so that you don't forget the URLs. Every browser has some method of bookmarking pages to be saved for later. There are a few problems with this traditional system for bookmarking sites. For one thing, there's a scale issue - the more bookmarks you have the harder it can be to keep track of them for later use. Another issue is that as we become more mobile distribute our work and browsing over a number of machines, it is hard to keep track of bookmarks from computer to computer. Have you ever tried to retrieve a web page you were looking for but couldn't remember if you had bookmarked it or on which machine? You are not alone! Thing 4 introduces you to the world of social bookmarking, so that you can not only keep track of your bookmarks on the web, and thus access them from any computer, but you can also share them with others! For this thing you will need a Delicious account. They're free! Delicious enables you to bookmark websites, tag them, and later retrieve your bookmarks when you log in. You can also see your friend's bookmarks and copy their bookmarks, search to see which other sites Delicious users have tagged with keywords of your interest, and other social thing. If you're confused, check out Common Craft on social boomarking. For Thing 4:
There are a number of Delicious Tools that make saving and sharing your bookmarks to Delicious even easier. The "bookmarklet" add on for browsers enables you to save web pages with one-click, rather than having to go to the Declicious website each time. They also offer widgets to share your bookmarks anywhere - your blog, website, or even your Facebook profile! Here is a video example of bookmarking something to Delicious and sharing it with the Transportation division. |

Between my office, the reference desk and home, I used 4 different computers on a regular basis and would frequently want to access a site which I had bookmarked on one of those other computers. I'm really not so interested in sharing bookmarks with others, but sticking MY stuff online and being able to access it from any computer made my life much easier! Now any site I find interesting I tag and add to my delicious account, professional or private, one stop shopping. It's amazing how often the two end up overlapping.
More recently, in my transportation life, I am asked to do research for folks. A few times the resources I collected were web sites. Rather than try to compile web addressed into emails or documents I created a Delicious file for that project. Tagging allows the resources to be catagorized and the "Notes" field allows me to annotate the resources. Here are a couple of examples:

I'm with you. I have a Mac, a PC, and a netbook and using Delicious to track everything is so easy. Good idea to take delicious a step further and create files for projects.
Thanks for sharing and doing 23 Things.
