Thing 3 - Photo Sharing

Thing 3 - Photo Sharing

Pictures are a quick and easy way to spice up any web page, but finding appropriate images can be tricky. Admit it, you are drawn to the picture before the text! Photo sharing sites, such as Flickr, Picasa (from Google), PhotoBucket, and Shutterfly are just a few examples.

For this Thing, we'll focus primarily on Flickr because it's easier to find and share photos with others through the use of "tags," or user defined keywords. Tags are basically a user-generated subject indexing using a "Folksonomy."

There are a number of different transportation agencies and libraries using Flickr to share their photo collections. Some of them include:

For Thing 3 you just need to go to Flickr and explore.

  1. Search for the tag "sla100" from everyone's uploads. Find a photo you like and post a link to it from your blog or leave a comment with it on this page.
  2. Search for the word "map" in the full text of everyone's uploads. What do you find? Is everything a map? What does this say about tagging?
  3. Find a Group that has a theme you like. Share it with the group!

If you want to go one step further, you can sign up for a free account with Flickr and share some of your own photos! (If you already have a Yahoo account that will work!) If you upload any photos of your library, tag them with "slatran", to easily share them with the division!

I just re-read the three steps Kendra listed for Thing 3, and realized this doesn't fall into any of them.  However, since I already have a Flickr account, I took some photos of my library the other day, and created a My Library set.  They're tagged with "slatran" as Kendra suggests above, so they're not hard to find, but I'll include a direct link to the set here anyway.  It's probably obvious that I was feeling stressed about my backlog when I took these pictures.  Hopefully future entries will be cheerier.

This was a fun one -- especially looking through the groups.  I think my two favorites so far have been the Transportation Trading Cards group and the Transportation Packaging group
