The Training and Events sub-team will be organizing workshops in Second Life to help you learn about the environment. Eventually, we hope to provide monthly speakers and tours, as well as SLA in SL Mentors that you can contact anytime. [More details to follow]

Currently, the group will be working on the following projects:

  • develop a 1-2 page intro guide (how to sign up, how to make an avatar, name limitations, suggestions on how to orient, pros and cons of Lindens etc
  • live intro session where users are walked through the process of creating an avatar and moving around the world
  • provide intro videos for Second Life that are already available on YouTube
  • develop a webinar session with slides and screens to get folks up to speed, steps, expectations etc. (ask them to get an avatar within a week and do a tour in SL)
  • offer 4-5 different in-world workshops for folks that they take in SL - an example is 101a on how to communicate, move around, make friends, etiquette etc.
  • have SLA SL Mentors - these folks are mentors and other SLA members can contact them in-world etc. for help or questions.

If you would like to participate, please contact Ming at miss_ming21@hotmail.com.

Christy Confetti Higgins and Scott Brown, from Sun Microsystems, are working with Jill, Ming and ClickU to try and schedule monthly WebEx overview sessions (free of charge) and in-world 101 sessions three times a month (those need to be small groups < 15 avatars ideally).

Maybe consider having SLA SL Mentors do in-world workshops more often as folks get more up to speed.

Considering partnering with ALS on monthly speakers about what librarians are doing in virtual worlds from all areas of information management, communications, types of libraries and information professionals.

Anyone need orientation or shopping advice?  IM Liatris Tidewater in-world.
