Getting Started In Second Life

Getting started in Second Life
Second Life Reference Guide

The Training and Events sub-team will be organizing workshops in Second Life to help you learn about the environment. Eventually, we hope to provide monthly speakers and tours, as well as SLA in SL Mentors that you can contact anytime.

SLA has a group in Second Life called "Special Libraries Assoc. in SL" which is open to anyone.  You can search in Second Life to find the group, then join it.  Why join?  The biggest benefit is that we can easily send notices to you of upcoming SLA events in Second Life, including formal and informal training events, socials, and more.  We'll also use the group to announce opportunities to help us introduce Second Life to more SLA members.

Trainings

Second Life - Learn all about it!

SLA and Click U are offering free online sessions to help you learn about virtual worlds (such as Second Life) and to help you get ready to participate in SLA Second Life events with members from around the world. This training is offered in two parts. Part 1 is delivered virtually via WebEx. Part 2 takes place in-world in Second Life. If you've never used Second Life before be sure to take Part 1 before taking Part 2.

Introduction to Second Life Part 1: Curious as to what Second Life is all about? Want to know how you can get started and what SLA is up to in this 3D virtual world? In Part 1 of this session, you'll learn about virtual worlds and how to get started using Second Life.

Introduction to Second Life Part 2:  This session will take place in Second Life and will require that you get your Second Life avatar (www.secondlife.com). This is an in-world workshop to help you get up to speed on how to use the Second Life environment. We will cover things such as how to make friends, teleporting a person, creating a home location and landmark, using search, camera controls, taking snapshots, profiles, creating notecards and media.

Talking, looking, flying, searching: A research report on information seeking behavior in Second Life Does a 3D immersive environment suggest new models of information seeking behavior? Just how are people getting at information in virtual worlds? What does this mean for libraries and librarians? At this event, Margaret Ostrander (SL: Testy Outlander) will outline five key information seeking factors from her research in Second Life. Margaret's research was ethnographic in nature and involved in-depth interviews of everyday Second Life users, as well an ethnographic approach involving in-world observation of how avatars interacted with the information environment. Margaret will also discuss her research methodology, challenges and process. SLAs land in SL
