What did you do on Friday night?

On Friday, October 17, you may have been one of many library graduate students (or interested SLers) who dropped by SLA's SL world to listen to guest speakers. After the talk, we teleported over to INKA's on Eduisland 4 to listen to a concert by Suzen Jeul Resistance. Share some of your experiences and thoughts by leaving comments on this page if you were able to join us last night.

As I am a newbie to SL, it still feels a bit surreal living within two lives (RL & SL) at once. As a few of my Twitter buddies know, I had trouble making the last event, so I was pleased to actually have "found" SLA's SL this time! I also realized that I definitely need to buy some new funky outfits and do something with my hair!

Below are a few links that people were asking about which I had included in the chat window of SL but thought I'd add them here as well:

Scott Brown (Steven at the panel discussion Friday night) presented a paper at the SLA Annual Conference entitled "Breaking Rules, Building Virtual Bridges: Using Second Life for Information Awareness in the Enterprise."  That paper is available on the SLA web site at: http://www.sla.org/pdfs/2008CP_Brown.pdf

The mention of FLICC came in response to hearing that one of the people attending worked (or sounded like she worked) in a federal library.  The FLICC Forum (notes) in September had a section that focused on Second Life.  Myself and Stephan Geens talked about how governments are using Second Life.  The PDF version of my presentation is hereand my other handout is here. With so many companies, not-for-profit organizations, educational institutions, and government entities being interested in virtual worlds, my belief is that we (information professionals) need to understand them, since it is likely we will have to use them in our work.  (BTW The amount of money being invested in virtual worlds is staggering -- hundreds of millions of dollars -- according to Virtual World Management, a research firm.)

Which reminds me that the discussion list for educators in Second Life can be found at  https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/educators.
