Proposals for workshops to be held at the 2009 Annual Conference are due on Aug. 22 (2008).  While the proposal form asks for a lot of detail, most of it is easy.  The heart of the proposal (and what takes time to write) is about the course itself.

The IT Division would be a likely host division for a Second Life workshop, if we wanted to propose one.  The workshop could be a half or whole day.  Hands-on would be possible, although the instructor should think about all the implications of doing so.  (For example, having a backup plan if the equipment/network fails.)

Juliane Schneider (juliane.schneider at gmail.com) is the Conference Planner for the IT Division.  You can approach her with questions.  Questions you might already wonder:

  • Benefits to you?  Looks good on your resume.  Helps you develop a new skill.  Places you in a different "light" among your peers.  Perhaps some compensation.
  • Does this mean your conference registration fee is waived?  No, giving a workshop does not eliminate any of SLA's registration fees.
  • When are workshops held?  Either on Saturday or Sunday.  You can propose what day you would prefer.
  • Can it be a joint proposal with you and someone else?  Yes.
  • Once the proposal is accepted, what are the next due dates?  With SLA going green, your handouts will likely be giving to workshop participants in electronic form.  That means that you will not have to have them done until sometime in May.  After that, you just need to be prepared for the workshop itself.
  • When will you know if the course has enough registrants so that it really is a "go"?  That will happen around May 1.  The divisions work very hard to ensure that their courses are not canceled due to low registration.
  • How are the workshops promoted/advertised?  They are advertised through the conference planner and conference literature.  The divisions also promote their workshops via the Internet, newsletters, email, etc.  The workshops generally attract SLA members from around the world.  Non-SLA members also attend.
I (Jill) don't know if any team members are interested in doing a workshop.  If you are, please consider using this page to discuss your thoughts and perhaps find a collaborator.  If you want to move the discussion to private email, please feel free to do so (or perhaps move to a different collaboration tool).

BTW I (Jill) have done workshops at the conference before and am proposing one for D.C. on social networking tools.  Feel free to ask me any questions to might have.

i would LOVE to do this. i'm game to do it solo or as part of a team, and i think a 1/2 day is plenty since it's unlikely everyone will be able to login to SL during the workshop.

we can do an in depth intro to SL:

    • creating avs
    • etiquette in SL
    • who is there
    • why you should explore even if you don't move your organization into it
    • how to acquire land and build it up
    • briefly address other MUVEs (Project Wonderland, OpenSim, even Lively) and how the presence of an avatar actually adds to the online experience, and how this can change how users search for information...

in my SL presentations i prep so that if there is zero internet connectivity (which has happened more than once) we can still get all the information out there - tons of pictures, videos, mock-ups, etc.

    thoughts?

I would be happy to help with this course, at any level (teaching, reviewing, assisting, bouncing ideas around) and I think it might be worth considering having a number of 'assistants' available to help each student have a fairly smooth experience (like 2 student to 1/assistant).

Is the course pricing fixed?  Because for several hundred dollars my management would NOT approve of us taking a course like this.

i agree with Kate about the pricing - it's a bit much for something which is so intangible (especially if we can't guarantee internet connectivity...)

I just looked at the prices for 2008 CE courses.  The half-day courses looked like they ranged from $199-$249.  That is comparable ot what the UIUC is charging for their Second Life courses (which run about 8 hours--4 2-hour sessoin).

I would be happy to help where needed, including marketing it to some other divisions.

Thanks, Jill, for moving this discussion to the wiki -- a perfect place for communicating and sharing ideas. I think this is a great idea. One thing you might think about in your proposal is to broaden the topic to other virtual communities and not sure Second Life, if you think there is enough experience in other platforms. Unfortunately, Nerida Hart and I are submitting an all-day course for Saturday and then we'll be tied up all-day on Sunday. Happy to consult on the content if needed as you develop OR to be a "tester" for the class.

I would also be happy to provide backup support in any way for a Workshop. Though I am a relative newbie to Second Life, I am an "immersed" newbie. It is fascinating to see what other groups, organizations or companies are doing in SL. In particular, I have been impressed with NCI classes. I also took the IBM Environmental Center tour and have attended discussion groups not related to SLA.

I love Amy's ideas for an in-depth intro to SL – and would also want to include some brief history of SL and a bit about the "solid content providers" in SL. Incidentally, I just read Wagner James Au's, The Making of Second Life.

I'd be interested in being involved in this as well.  I think it's a good opportunity to do hands-on demos that aren't feasible in a remote setting.  Do we know whether we can get rooms with computers for everyone?  I'm afraid I haven't taken the courses before.

Juliane is looking into the possibility of using a computer lab "off site" (not part of the convention center).  This is something that she will need for one of the other workshops and she's tracking down several possibilities.  The hope is that the off-site facility would be cost-effective in terms of equipment rental.
