KM Role Models

Faces of KM

Denise Bedford is now the Goodyear Professor of Knowledge Management at Kent State University (KSU). She is running the Knowledge Management program in the Information Architecture and Knowledge Management Program (IAKM http://iakm.kent.edu/). The IAKM program is defining KM competencies, job streams, and ways to insert these into hiring practices. Denise, Nancy Faget and Karen Huffman have been talking about capturing 9-minute videos on KM professionals. The videos would be captured during the SLA 2010 Annual Conference, as well as at other conferences and events, and aggregated on the IAKM web site, the Kent State YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/KentStateTV), and the tag (sladkm) Karen created for the SLA KM division (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sladkm). See example of video (http://iakm.kent.edu/km) organized and posted by Janna Korzenko, MLIS, Academic Program Coordinator, Information Architecture & Knowledge Management, Kent State University.

Karen Huffman plans to contact a selection of KM members to record videos based on a selection of topics outlined by Jeffrey. Kent State will have a table in the exhibitors hall where they you can view examples and where they may also be recording a selection of videos. See attached information on location information for Kent State during the annual 2010 conference.

Draft of questions for interviews

To standardize the interviews, Denise pulled together the following list of questions/ideas for the KM role models:

1. Please introduce yourself - organization, title, how long you've been with the organization.

2. Would you please describe your role at (organization) -- what does a typical day in your life look like?

3. How did you come to this role?

4. What do you enjoy the most about this role?

5. Do you have a success story that you'd like to share?

6. What is the most challenging aspect of your position?

7. What skills, competencies and experience do you think are important for your role?

8. Are there courses you suggest students take to enhance their skills and competencies and prepare them for KM jobs?

9. Where do you think this profession is going in the future?

10. What advice would you offer to anyone who is thinking about a professional career in knowledge management?

Tips on recording, editing video

Additional Note: YouTube videos may be up to 2 GB and 10 minutes in length although for our project we are recommending 9 minutes in length.

Other ideas?

Are there other questions that should be included in this list? Would you be willing to be "filmed" during the annual conference in June? Would you be willing to work on this project, contributing videos from KM professionals? Please leave your comments and ideas below.

This is a great project. I had some ideas. Think of it as an outreach tool and a "sales" tool. The videos should be fun!

I think it would be great to break this down into themes, where each video is on a theme, rather than a person. It is fine to show people saying things contrary to each other. That makes for a lively viewing.

All of these questions are too much to cover in one session.

Video is great for bringing life to a subject and it would be good to keep that in mind. I don't think that you need to show each person's answer to each question, only the most interesting.

    One theme could be:
Role, responsibilities, how did you get here, typical day, favorite part of the job

One theme could be success stories,  overcoming challenges.

    5. Do you have a success story that you'd like to share?

    6. What is the most challenging aspect of your position?

One theme could be: Impact of KM ---  Give an example of how KM has had an impact at your firm, or for you.(This could be part of the success stories, but people might have success stories about other things as well)

One theme could be: Preparing for the future

    7. What skills, competencies and experience do you think are important for your role?

I like Jeffrey's breakdown of themes and plan to capture four short 2-3 minute segments for each speaker arranged by topic during the SLA 2010 annual conference.

       1. Role, responsibilities, how did you get here, typical day, favorite part of the job
       2. Success stories, overcoming challenges
       3. Impact of KM
       4. Preparing for the future

I want to encourage KM members to visit the Kent State booth and share their ideas as well. Between the two options (me or the booth), we can obtain some quality footage. When I return home from SLA, will splice the conversations together to make the video include a handful of speakers/ideas shared and not just be one person talking for nine minutes.
