Knowledge Discovery and Ontologies (Full Day)

Instructor: Denise A. D. Bedford, Senior Information Officer, World Bank Group

Successful companies and organizations need good and timely information.  They also need ways of mining the knowledge that they already have.  The role of ontologies and knowledge organization systems (KOS) in knowledge discovery are critical in the success of organizations, making them more efficient, effective and competitive.  Intellectual technologies such as metadata, thesauri, classification schemes, semantic technologies, authority control, search systems or recommender engines, etc. have to be understood as providing leverage for the expertise of the successful knowledge management professional.

Time: June 14, 2008, Saturday, 8:00am to 5:00pm
Location: Convention Center, 614

Mapping Knowledge and Knowledge Flows (Half Day)

Instructor: Patti Anklam, Principal Consultant, Hutchinson Associates

Level: Intermediate

Note: Was offered in Denver and received very positive evaluations.

We live in networks all the time, but rarely stop to think about our relationships in terms of the connections among and between individuals and groups and the paths of tangible and intangible interactions that characterize their collaboration. Emerging methods and tools highlight the impact of learning about "the science of networks" on knowledge management methods and process design. This course will provide a tutorial on the current, leading-edge thinking about networks and knowledge and introduce two important techniques: Social network analysis (SNA) (also called Organizational Network Analysis, or ONA) and Value Network Analysis (VNA).

Session Title: Personal Knowledge Management: Your Quest to Find, Connect, Learn, and Explore

Description: Personal knowledge management (PKM) is a concept that emerged from a combination of knowledge management (KM), personal information management and cognitive human abilities. More particular, the Personal KM is focused on helping an individual be more effective in his or her own work environment. Although the focus is on the individual, the goal is to enable individuals to operate better in a shared information setting. This session will start with a description of different types of local personal data management options; various examples of software products will be used to show ever more complex possibilities. Experienced KM specialists will demonstrate practical uses of current PKM software in real world scenarios with opportunities for the audience to ask questions.

Speakers:

  • David Stern, Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library, Brown University
"Personal Knowledge Management: networking heterogeneous elements"  (PPT)

The complexities of synchronizing various personal tools is highlighted, with an emphasis on searching across various taxonomies, platforms, and media types.  The question posed for the two following speakers is: How well can Enterprise tools address the less-controlled environment of PKM?

  • Jackie Prentice, Account Executive, EOS International Headquarters
    "EOS and PKM Options" (PPT)

This is an example of using free tools such as DOT NET NUKE to manage personal and business information assets. Session Title: Sharing Knowledge with After Action Reviews

Description: After Action Reviews (AARs) or Lessons Learned can help groups reflect on a specific experience or project by using a series of planned questions to ask about what happened, why it happened, what went well, what needs to be improved, and what was learned. AARs were originally developed by the US Army as a means of learning from training experiences. They are now widely used by many corporations for the purpose of learning, reflection and continuous improvement. Reviews can take just a few moments, or many hours, depending on the significance of the experience or project, and the need to document the learning experience. Documenting these sessions and sharing can lead to better planning or work flow improvements, or can simply bring closure for the participant. AARs can be a powerful way to develop habits of reflection by building learning into the employee's everyday work routine.
