Knowledge Management Division Members:
The year is coming quickly to a close, and I wanted to update you as to our recent activities and upcoming events. The latest news to share is we have completed our first elections and have elected several new officers for the Division. We are very excited to have these new additions to the Division Executive Board and particularly excited that our incoming Chair-Elect for 2008 is an international member! To learn more about these newly elected folks, please visit the following page: bios and photos.
The Division membership is up to 637 members (as of the end of August!) Not bad for our first year.
The Division completed its Strategic Plan in August. We welcome your review and comments to the plan. Special thanks to the very hard working Strategic Planning Committee, who put this plan together. They are:
- Susan Montgomery, Chair, A. T. Kearney Inc., Denver, CO
- Rikke Bisgaard, Linklaters LLP, London, UK
- Cathy Roberson, UPS Supply Chain Solutions, Atlanta, GA
- Rachel Watstein, IBM, New York, NY
- Charles Wenger, Independent Consultant, San Francisco, CA
- Teresa Wilkins, Buck Consultants LLP, New York
Many of the goals and objectives outlined in the plan are already underway!
Please take a moment to visit the newly revised website/wiki. This site and our discussion list will be the primary communication tool for our members. The site includes open access information and a members only section. Efforts have begun to develop a Division eNewsletter/Bulletin and also develop specific content areas for the various special interests groups identified.
With the election of our new Director of Professional Development (PD), the PD Committee has started identifying a means and topics for delivery continuing education programs to our members, outside of annual conference. The Division Board recognizes that not everyone can attend the SLA Annual Conference, and we are committed to offering our members other opportunities for learning and interaction. Please contact Doug Joubert, Committee Chair, with your ideas and suggestions for topics and speakers. If you were unable to attend the SLA Annual Conference in Denver, the KM Division session presentations are available in our members only [Continuing Education] section.
Plans are well underway for the SLA Annual Conference in Seattle . The Division has had five CE Courses approved by the SLA Professional Development Committee. Donna Gibson is heading up the Program Planning Committee for the Denver conference and many of the session topics and speakers have been identified. Speakers on the agenda right now include David Gurteen, Karen Huffman, and David Snowden. Topics include: Personal Knowledge Management: Your Quest to Find, Connect, Learn, and Explore; Educating the Next Generation Knowledge Managers: How Library Schools, I-Schools, and the Profession are Meeting the Challenge, and What's all the Buzz about Social Networking Applications? Of course, we are also planning to have the KM Roundtable, our annual Business Meeting, and a Division Networking Reception. More to come on Seattle in the next couple of months!
The KM Division Board meets monthly to discuss our progress and plans. Your comments and feedback are welcome. Please take a moment and send me a message (karen.reczek@us.bureauveritas.com) or call me (716-505-3592) with your thoughts and suggestions on how we can do better in serving you, our members. Or please feel free to call any member of our Executive or Advisory Board. As always, we are looking for volunteers to assist with our numerous committees including Vendor Relations, and the newsletter. I am very proud of the enormous progress this Division has made in first year (we officially became a Division in September 2006). None of this could have been accomplished without the hard work, energy and creativity of the KM Executive and Advisory Board. They are a truly dedicated bunch and a real pleasure to work with.
Until my next message, best regards,
Karen Reczek
SLA KM Division Chair
