SLA Boston Discussion List

Boston Chapter Discussion List
The Boston Chapter of SLA has an email Discussion List provided by SLA Headquarters, called SLA-BOS. The interface is provided by Lyris on a paid contract from SLA HQ; all lists provided by SLA are under the same overall umbrella. Users can opt to have emails arrive as they are sent out, or in a daily digest format.

SLA-CBOS is a discussion list for members of SLA Boston. Those considering membership in the association are welcome to join. The goal of this list is to promote networking. Personal messages should be addressed to an individual, not broadcast to all subscribers. Please show courtesy and exercise tolerance. Focus will be on topics relevant to the membership of the SLA Boston Chapter.

In recent months, the Boston Chapter has implemented Guidelines on using the Chapter's Discussion List.

Some suitable subjects for posting are:

  • Discussions of topics of interest to special librarians from daily practical problems to the future of the information profession
  • Queries on topics of mutual interest
  • Announcements of chapter meetings and other activities
  • Announcements forwarded from SLA Association Office or from other SLA Chapters/Divisions, etc. of general interest to SLA Boston members.
  • Job announcements
  • Member news
  • Sharing of committee information

Spamming, blatant advertising, and irrelevant postings are not welcome.

Click the Subscribe button at the bottom of the page.
Once subscribed, you receive messages until you "unsubscribe" or until mail bounces from your email account. Because of the large volume of messages that bounce because of intermittent problems, be aware that you may become "unsubscribed" in this way.
Reading Messages, Changing Options SLA's web site has good instructions on how to read messages via the web, change personal settings, etc. Please see their Discussion Lists page.

Net Etiquette
Participants on this list are asked to be tolerant and courteous. Messages sent should relate to issues of interest to members of the Boston Chapter of SLA. The goal of this conference is to promote networking. If problems arise, they should be referred to the President of the Boston Chapter or the list manager (slaboston.list^at^gmail.com), as should any comments and suggestions on the functioning and policy of the conference.

Cross-posting from Other Lists
Cross-posting, or forwarding a note you have seen on another list, is a normal procedure on mailing lists. It is good form to notify the original writer of a note of your intention to forward that note. If you are sending a note of your own to several lists, it is a courtesy to have the note "fwd from (original list)" in the subject field or to draw attention to the cross-posting at the beginning of the message to make it easier for people subscribed to several lists to delete the duplicates.

Bouncing Messages
Don't send messages to the list about bounced messages. Send such messages to the list manager (slaboston.list^at^gmail.com).

Why haven't I been receiving email from the discussion list?

There are times when members may notice they have not received communication from the Discussion List. When this happens, there are a few possible reasons why.

1) the member has set his/her email to an "auto response" when they are out of the office: not every email is affected, but a few emails may be moved to the "bad email" folder.

2) the member has changed his/her main email address but not informed the Discussion List Manager: informing SLA HQ of any email changes will not change the discussion list email address....for that, one must contact the Discussion List Manager (for each list).

3) the member's email setting is on "unsubscribed" instead of normal: contact the Discussion List Manager to have the address changed back.

Members who wish to be part of the discussion list should pay attention to email arrivals. If no email has arrived for at least two (2) weeks, please check the Discussion List Archives via the main SLA website (http://www.sla.org/content/community/lists/index.cfm ) If emails have been posted to the Chapter Discussion List, the member should contact the Discussion List Manager for a problem check.

The Discussion List Manager has the ability to check on the status of emails, of the member's individual status and settings, and can modify the email address as needed. This holds true for every SLA Discussion List, not just the Boston Chapter.
