Welcome to the National Institute of Standards and Technology campus in Gaithersburg, Maryland!   NIST has a beautiful 500+ acre campus.   This is the entryway of the Administration Building, where the Library is located.

The Hall of Standards connects the Administration Building lobby to the NIST Research Library. Exhibits here pay tribute to NIST's important role in U.S. measurements and standards.   Looking beyond the Hall's window you will see a beautiful courtyard where employees sometimes lunch.   As you approach the library you'll also pass the NIST Museum.

The Research Library has a popular web presence in addition to an attractive, three-level physical Library.   The Library, built in 1966, is in the Modernist style. Its floor-to-ceiling glass walls provide natural light and an environment conducive for customers to work. The adjacent portico also draws customers in warm weather.   The Information Commons includes Information and Circulation desks which are positioned close together to serve our customers most efficiently.

The Information Desk greets customers as they enter the Information Commons.   The customer workstations get a lot of use.   A mezzanine overlooks the wireless Reading Room, a quiet place where customers come to think, work, and receive research assistance from reference librarians.

Stacks, main level.   Stacks, mezzanine level. Circulation staff use wireless technology to track usage as they reshelve books.   Customers work alone or in groups using the plasma screen in the Collaboration Corner.

Customers/authors scan articles directly to their desktop accounts from the Library.   A group of seven librarians are Laboratory Liaisons. They work collaboratively with researchers in the NIST Labs assisting with research projects, measuring impacts, and analyzing trends, publications and citations.   Thank you for visiting the NIST Research Library virtually. Our dynamic staff hopes to see you in person when SLA comes to Washington, DC, in 2009!
