FHWA Research Library at Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center

Welcome to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Research Library!

In support of the Federal Highway Administration's research, development, and technology (RD&T) mission to investigate new highway technologies and transfer those research results to the transportation community, the FHWA Research Library furnishes collections, maintaining all research reports by or for the FHWA RD&T, electronic resources, and services in support of the research needs of the FHWA staff. In addition to a circulating collection of books, reports, technical standards, and periodicals, the FHWA Research Library provides reference and research services, cataloging and indexing of transportation related materials and interlibrary borrowing and document delivery services to FHWA employees.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) began an effort several years ago to transform its Technical Reference Center (TRC) from a repository of agency-published or agency-sponsored research reports into a fully functioning library with expanded services and resources. Recently, the TRC name was changed to the FHWA Research Library and the library mission was expanded to include service to all FHWA R&D employees, not just those located at the TFHRC.

TFHRC provides the FHWA and the entire world highway community with the most advanced research and development related to new highway technologies. The research focuses on providing solutions to complex technical challenges.   In the Structures Laboratory full-scale bridges are erected in order to conduct experimental studies on the behavior of bridge components.   The Hydraulics Laboratory tests hydraulic performance of highway drainage structures and stream crossings, solves hydraulic and stream stability problems, and supports operational engineers with design guidance tools.

The scanning electron microscope lab is used to study the morphology and chemical composition of highway materials, durability of concrete, composition of bridge paints, durability of geosynthetics, and alkali-silica reaction products.   The Geotechnical Laboratory studies the interactions between soil and structured elements for bridge foundations and retaining wall systems.   The Human Centered Systems Laboratory analyzes road user behaviors using a variety of laboratory methodologies that employ the Highway Driving Simulator, a field research vehicle, and video data collection.

Researchers in the Concrete Laboratories evaluate new test methods, conduct concrete materials research, develop mixture design and analysis procedures for concrete pavements, and provide concrete forensics.   BoRam Lee, Senior Library Technician, is responsible for interlibrary loan and document delivery services, and serials management.   John McKenna, Library Technician, is responsible for collection maintenance and circulation services.

Kim Edwards, Cataloger, performs originial and copy cataloging, and subject analysis and classification.   Lance Warren, Exploratory Advanced Research (EAR) program Research Librarian, is primarily dedicated to supporting EAR employees with reference support services.   Jennifer Boteler, Supervisor/Reference Librarian, provides in-depth reference and research services, provides guidance on library policies and procedures, and oversees library staff and operations.
