Welcome to Playing in Sandboxes!

Introduction

With the advent of Web 2.0 and the exponential growth of social media tools, information professionals need to gain skills and expertise that will allow them to leverage these powerful technologies in the workplace. The course will also help information professionals make informed decisions and build effective strategies for enhancing and/or building innovative products and services that will strengthen the viability and visibility of the library within the organization and/or community. This program will provide the opportunity for the group to explore together a selection of collaborative applications and productivity tools.

Purpose, Process, and Payoff

Broken into five modules, this all-day course will provide participants the opportunity to explore a selection of collaborative applications and productivity tools together. The instructors will offer insights on how to create multi-formatted, interactive products and services for special libraries and how to get comfortable with these new tools. Each module will include brief lecture/overview and practical examples, group participation, one or more eLearning tutorials that will walk you through how to use each application, and hands-on "playtime." Students understanding will be accessed with short group discussions after the hands-on segments of each module.

Learning Objectives

  • Students should walk away from each module with a clear knowledge of what these technologies entail through lectures and hands-on exposure to features and functionality.
  • Build knowledge skills to define, compare, and differentiate the social media tools.
  • Evaluate and appraise tools through practical experimentation and class discussions.
  • Translate concepts learned into practical applications for your organization as well as personal and professional affiliations.
