Mission, Goals, Programming, Contacts

The Idea: To develop an extensible model for SLA, beginning with DC/SLA to guide retiring or retired information professionals in the encore chapter of their lives - by sharing knowledge and experience with each other and to develop a path for continued Association engagement.
Mission:

The Retired Members Caucus is designed to provide resources and a forum to address issues related to, but not limited to,

  • Explore options in planning for either retirement or for second careers
  • Provide platform for discussion of the transitions and/or challenges (financial, medical, travel, etc) relating to retirement or to second careers
  • Articulate possible roles for Caucus members in SLA Inc and beyond
  • Develop Legacy (or Ethical Wills) - what we want to bequeath to the next generation
  • Compile selected information resources to support retired or retiring SLA members
Goals (2011)

*Vote on a name change from KRET to ENCORE: Retired Members Caucus in 2011.
*Set up committee structure to increase membership, to plan programs, to share information.
*Set up leadership succession model, identifying the next convener, so that the Caucus stays refreshed.
*Explore mentoring options with Young Professionals, DCSLA, Library Programs, FLICC.
*Plan program for 2011, 2012 and agenda for meeting and communicate to membership.
*Increase membership from 60 to 120.
*Convert Wiki to WordPress when possible.
*Communicate using Listserv at least monthly.

Completed Goals (2010)

*Articulate a mission
*Set goals
*Create a wiki, which includes a mindmap, a blog of tips and experiences, an outline of keys areas for knowledge sharing
*Propagate the wiki with content, anticipating a switch to WordPress.
*Identify those who might want to participate and develop engagement.
*Create a logo and "face" or identity for this group or movement.
*Secure a list of retired SLA members; Caucus members, DCSLA retirees from Linda Broussard, anticipating further member engagement.
*Report progress to the SLA Board and Chapters and meet at conference in New Orleans to evolve the project.
*Survey membership and potential membership to explore roles the Encore Group might have with the Association going forward.

Thank you first to those of you who have contributed ideas to the Encore Group. Everyone knows the principal of a wiki – that each of us can post and add comments ourselves. You are all enabled so please sign in and add information or blog postings. I am trying to decide on the viability of this group...everyone is busy even after they start their encore life...however staying connected to SLA seems a viable goal and as leaders we need to help create the path – unless you don't think the path we have
started is the right one or maybe even needed.

Please advise in the next week (as I am preparing a short report for June meeting and for the DC Chapter):
    1) Do we want to build and sustain an Encore Group? Do you still have an interest in being part of such a group?
    2) Are we personally interested in contributing? If so = how?
    3) The Encore group is meant to be a source of information, personal stories, and a means to "stay in touch" for those of us who are leaving our day library jobs – is that enough? Or should we also offer ourselves up as mentors? Do we want to think about some type of programming offer? Who would be willing to take on either of these two elements?

Look forward to seeing everyone in New Orleans – but before you stop reading – please email me back information needed. All Best, Susan Fifer Canby

    > It's good to get positive feedback on the encore idea. I have been thinking of this for several years and I have asked Susan to give it some thought and start the ball rolling. I am not an encore person, yet, but I can see this looming in the not very distant future and want to encourage the group and communication as a model for wider dissemination
Lynne makes several good points - getting together for lunch or after hours and just keeping in touch is reason enough to do this. My original thinking was that the group would both help people prepare for 'encorehood' as well as provide a method of communicating and sharing once you have embarked. I do think some kind of program to provide ideas of both the preparation for as well as the successful transition to is a good idea. If nothing else, my vendor budget could support this while I'm still in an employed mode.
I encourage everyone to go to the wiki and use the very useful material there and add some of your own!

    Hi Susan
One more actionable point from the emails to add to your list is the engagement of the chapter leaders... I'm happy to volunteer to work on moving that forward, perhaps with Linda's input?

    Dear All,

As someone who is about to embark on this grand adventure, I think the idea of staying in touch is enough in and of itself to argue for keeping the group. Contributions through the wiki are good-I've enjoyed reading everything that is there now. Getting together every so often for lunch or happy hour or an outing (like the Young Professionals Group does) would be fun. Maybe we could join them occasionally and build some relationships that could result in mentoring opportunities. I also agree with Sharon that we could look at the FLICC model if we want to pursue mentoring-very appropriate for a group of veterans.

I know we have some chapter and Encore members who do not live close by, but for those who do live in the are and who want to stay really active in SLA, please join me as a member of the Local Arrangements Committee for the Leadership Summit in January 2011. I'll post something to the wiki later today.

Although programming is always appealing to me, it usually requires funding. I'm not sure any of us wants to get into fundraising and I don't think we want another group hitting up our vendor partners. I think we should see if the Pres-Elect wants to do a program that would appeal to those near retirement and we could contribute to a panel or suggest a speaker, etc. I don't think we want to do programming on our own.

More later--check the wiki for an exciting volunteer opportunity!

Esteemed Colleagues....just kidding, I meant to say "you'se guys!' as my Aunt from Chicago referred to the Indianapolis Sweeney's.

FLICC is working very aggressively on a Coaching and Mentoring Program. The Committee is accepting applications for those who want to do both or either. There will be training for those who volunteer in both or one area. They are also signing up info professionals who would like to participate as a Mentee, etc.

It seems to me that we should do something along the coaching and mentoring arena in conjunction with the Encore Project. Perhaps we should thoroughly check out the FLICC initiative as a model for whatever we choose to do.

    Susan,

The DC Chapter is already interested in growing our chapter's mentoring efforts so I've asked Mary to look at the SLA links that Linda sent to us. We can work with FLICC and determine how to either partner with them and other groups or at least figure out how to setup some mentoring communications channels for the chapter.

Regarding planning a program - I always love a good party! Is it too late to get a room during the dinner slot in New Orleans and simply promote it as an intro session to this group? Since Anne has offered some sponsorship, we could have refreshments and simply talk about our vision for this group and see what people think. I don't think we need to have a perfect "travel guide" to retirement before going to our population, we just need a clear focus and vision.

As has already been mentioned, I figured that we would help to keep retired members engaged and help to prepare our members to prepare for retirement. The wiki can play a part in that by pointing to resources and sites for the various facets of retirement but it looks like what you really want is a social communication web site to allow for our members to share stories, find each other, and interact.

Maybe I've been in government too long but I actually LIKE having a strategic plan to help guide what we're doing. I might be mis-reading the goals on the wiki but most of it seems focused on building the group, not on the service the group will provide to our membership.

James...if the group wants to get together at conference, then I'm sure we can find a spot for you. You or I will need to contact Kristin Foldvik and Akisha Edogun for placement. I have a chapter consultation room that has some slots during the day Monday - Wednesday.

Our events staff will need to know what day, time, how many people, what F&B, and who is paying for? At this point, you would need to work out a communications plan to promote to your intended audience. If its small, you may want to check with Anne for availability in presidential suite.

And, Libby, of course, I'll work with you on your task. Just let me know whatever you need.

Also, one option, if you have a plan together is to present to the Chapter Cabinet. There will be a notice going out this week for agenda items for the Chapter Cabinet Meeting. I'm anticipating that the deadline will be May 21.

    Susan et al:

If we do the first one in July after I retire, I'll organize a lunch. Perhaps at or near a museum so we could also do some sightseeing.

I'm getting a bit confused on the Encore concept--so please confirm. Are we starting Encore as a DC Chapter activity that could serve as a model for other chapters who want to keep their retired members engaged? That was my assumption. If we are trying to go association-wide with the group, it seems like we would be duplicating the Retired Members Caucus.

Sharon Lenius has volunteered to work on the 2011 Leadership Summit Local Arrangements steering committee--thanks, Sharon! Anybody else interested in being on the steering committee (will ask for volunteers to staff the info booth at a later date)? First meeting for the steering committee is Thursday, May 13, 5:30 pm, at LC Madison Building, Room 203. Would love to have some veteran hands! Let me know if you want to join us.

    Thanks--Lynne McCay

Based on your thoughts I have drafted some new goals for July-December 2010. I am not quite sure how to proceed because:
--think everyone likes the concept – but it will probably take someone to step forward and agree to help organize a lunch
--so far people have been reluctant to add their ideas to the wiki – so am not sure that is the right tool – and yet it gives a great reference point
--think we need to open this up to more people but don't think we have enough traction yet
--if Sharon or someone would be interested in pursuing the mentoring options that would be helpful for us to identify ourselves as interested.
--already I am getting questions about consulting and am not personally interested now but would like to recommend those of you who are – wonder if this should be a component of our group as well?
Anyway – think we need three or four of us who are willing to act as leaders until we have more people engaged – but who is willing? And if so, to do what of above or new goals? Best, S

Linda, James, Anne, Lynne, Libby, Sharon – maybe we could schedule a time in your suite Anne to discuss this and clarify our goals for next six months – I did take a stab at them and James is right – my focus now is probably to develop the cadre of people who will tackle certain aspects of this because I know it will work better to get more people involved...to clarify and parse out the things we might be involved with – mentoring, acting as a clearinghouse to connect retirees who want to consult or continue to work, supporting local arrangements for conference, as well as knowledge sharing.

Linda: I will write a report of where we stand so far for the Chapter meeting or for the Board meeting – whichever seems more appropriate Linda.

Lynne – the strategy all along has been to develop a prototype in DC that would be extensible across the association.
We don't want to get in the way of the caucus – nor to we want to be confused with them. We don't want to be just a social group – we want to figure out how to engage SLA members who are retiring or have retired in the Association. That is what it will take all of us to figure out.

James is figuring out a logo for our group – even with all he has on his plate. Thank you James!

This has been a good conversation that somehow I wish was on the blog – maybe I'll figure a way to transfer it – as useful to capture this I think. S
