SLA Legal Division Round Tables Unconference

This year, the traditional Legal Division Round Tables will be organized as an UnConference.

When and where is it? Wednesday, June 16, 10:00 - 11:30 am , Convention Center Room 209

What's an UnConference? They take many forms, but at their heart they are all participant driven events. There is no "sage on the stage" imparting knowledge to an audience of passive listeners. Everyone is invited to share what they know because everyone knows something to share.  Everyone. Yes, even you.

How does this work? UnConferences aren't that different from Round Table discussions.  It helps to have a theme or list of possible topics of discussion set out ahead of time. (That's what we'll use this wiki for - to brainstorm some ideas!)  But they are also open and flexible enough to spur of the moment topic changes.  If more topics are suggested than can be discussed, we'll vote on what to talk about and/or split into small groups.

Are there rules for this sort of thing? Actually, yes.

  1. Whoever comes is the right people.
  2. Whatever happens is the only thing that could have
  3. Whenever it starts is the right time.
  4. When it's over, it's over.

Simple, right? Plus, there's the Law of Two Feet: If at any time during our time together you find yourself in any situation where you are neither learning nor contributing, use your two feet, go someplace else!

Let's start planning topics!

    Hi Legal Division,

This is very exciting. I saw the results of an Un-conference at the Leadership Summit in Jan. It was really great for generating ideas.

I'd like to plan to be there, but without knowing when it's scheduled it will be difficult to plan.

What is 'emerging technologies'?  Could we have an example so we know what's already on the list?

Would like to add Knowledge Management and Intellectual Property to the topics list.

    Thank you so much,

    Cynthia

I added Cynthia's topics and a few of my own to the list above with our names following in case folks have questions.  Haven't done unconference before but wondering (along with Cynthia) if topics are supposed to be broad or if we want to be a little more focused?  Mine are phrased as questions b/c I'm really interested in others' experiences with these issues.  Thanks!  Jill

This does look terrific, unfortunately being in AU I will be watching the developments from this virtual space. I wonder if there will be any capturing /webinar style of the un-conference when it runs on 16 June?

I am interested in how other (US) law librarians find negotiations with the big 3 - Lexis/Westlaw/CCH. As a follow on what strategies have been useful?

As a result of general dissatisfaction with those legal publishers here in Au I started reviewing legal publishing globally, I came across a lot of discussions around the concept of law publishers being regulated by FTC (why it was done, then when the protection was removed)I am also watching the AALL caucus on consumer advocacy.

Regarding emerging technologies we are about to deploy a corporate social media tool "cisco quads" and will be setting them up around interest groups, and also using them for producing our current awareness newsletters. I could interview our Systems Librarian who has been running the project, if you have questions around this use of technology in a law firm environment.

    Cheers
    Janet
