Discussion List Policy: A newer member asked if we restricted who could post to the MN Chapter discussion list after seeing a post from a consultant based in Washington, D.C.  The post was actually about the achievements of two other members and was not really spam but it brought up an interesting question of who could post to the list.  We have always maintained that an open list (i.e. not restricted to members only) promotes our events as well as the benefits of membership in SLA.  The local chapter of AALL recently decided to close their list to members only which seems like a big mistake.  (They also do not automatically invite non-members to all of their events.)  After a brief discussion, our leaders decided to continue to deal with unusual posts on a case-by-case basis as we have been lucky that most of our vendors use their own mailing lists for promotional items.  This was discussed at a recent board meeting so that it would be captured in the minutes and and will also be included in the Chapter Recommended Practices.
