Exploring new technologies  - reported Jan 2008

  1. The Boston chapter held a program in Second Life, some in person and some by Avatar, checking out Info Island as well as other places...including Yankee Stadium - with Red Sox paraphernalia all around, of course!
  2. At an afternoon program at University of Iowa, an SLIS student presented on Second Life and its relation to librarianship.
  3. In August, Tim Spaulding of LibraryThing joined the Portland, ME to show us what LibraryThing is all about.  It was a lot of fun to see all of the enhancements they've made and talk about it's different uses.
  4. The Philadelphia Chapter created a new series of professional development workshops in the Fall, called TechTopics,  in collaboration with  the Drexel Univ Student chapter -- two of the instructors were current or recent DUSLA members.  The three topics so far included:

Your Library in Second Life:  Taking the Virtual Plunge
Firefox 2.0:  Customize, Automate, and "Rediscover the Web" with Add-Ons
  5. The Washington Chapter sponsored "Giving Libraries a Second Life in a  Virtual World" presentation and discussion about Second Life, a virtual  immersive world that combines 3D visualization and social networking. Is it hype or the future of the Web?
  6. The Princeton Chapter created a PT/SLA Wiki to replace their Web site.
  7. The San Andreas Chapter develop a blog as communication channel to replace announcements on  chapter website and the bi-monthly newsletter. Blog postings include information on our chapter board members, announcements of chapter events such as programs, tours, solo librarian meetings and also conference and program summaries and book  reviews authored by our members.
  8. The SoloLibrarians group within the San Andreas Chapter  sponsored 6 meetings including on a session on Google Guide, and another on Second Life
  9. The Wisconsin Chapter presented Why Futurists Can't Predict the Future, and How You Can, September - 2007,  to help member learn some simple techniques to improve the ability to more accurately forecast trends in science, business, technology.
  10. The Pacific Northwest Chapter presented A Conversation with Stephen Abram on 31 October 2006.
