Fun! However, if there is any way to import the avatar I created in Yahoo Avatars, I sure haven't figured it out. Can someone help me?
And Meez -- fuggedaboudit! Everything costs $ unless you want to look like a dork LOL.
Similary, I couldn't figure out how to export framed photos I created in Big Huge Labs.
But even though I'm not much of an exporter, I'm glad to have some hands on experience with this stuff!
And don't even start me on Second Life. I'm dying to get some hands on experience, but my IT dept. can't seem to 'open my ports' or whatever I need to do to access it...and since it's not (directly) part of my work I'm not about to force the issue. Bummer.

SnagIt or other low-cost/free tools: Screen grab tools like SnagIt allow you to grab images of what you see on your desktop, crop the image, and save it for use in other programs and/or as avatars.
Second Life & IT department: I'm not sure why you limit your learning because of your IT department? Why can't you explore Second Life or other tools that may not be available to you through work during your personal time at home, in a coffee shop, in a public library, etc. There are many places that offer FREE WiFi if you don't have it at home. If you don't have a laptop... then perhaps your IT department can loan you one.
