Feel the Power

I finished the 23 Things in the middle of last month.  What a great idea this program has proven to be.  As an independent info pro, I really appreciated the structure, context, and tools that the 23 Things program provided to me.  The content provided just the right amount of exposure and practice with dozens of Web 2.0 tools, and I have already started to use some of them in my business and on behalf of my clients.  Thanks and kudos to Debbie Hunt, Stephen Abram, and the many volunteers who made this program happen.  Cindy Shamel, Shamel Information Services

October 22 Update

We are getting close to having 1000 people working their way through the 23 Things! As of today there are 987 other SLA members that along with you have also committed to improving their technology skills by completing 23 Things. Keep working at it!

A few updates/reminders/suggestions:

We have had our first publicly posted completion of 23 Things. Congratulations to Dianna Roberts from New Zealand! See how she did it on her blog: http://www.bloglines.com/blog/DiannaR. If you have completed the program, feel free to send me a link to your blog. I will post congratulations and examples of other completed efforts when available.

Recently we posted an extension of the deadline for completion of 23 Things, now December 15. This is the cut-off for being recognized with a prize and certificate. The site will remain available for those that aren't able to finish, or who can't start the program at this time. Of course we hope you will be able to complete as soon as you can!

Finally, I presented an introduction to this program at the Upstate New York chapter's fall meeting and there were still many people who had not heard of it. So please, spread the word. Encourage other members to participate. Get a group of people from your chapter to work on it together, and be each other's motivation! This really is a valuable program and we want to ensure that every person that feels the need to improve their skills is able to participate.

Thanks!

I'm excited to work on my blog and am avoiding Delaware's heat wave by spending a few hours catching up with some of the 23things.  I am a *huge* fan of all things web2.0 so this is really a fun way to relax for me.  I also now have an entirely different focus than when I originally created my blog.  I am starting my first professional library job this September at a private PreK-12 school and I am the upper school's librarian.  I will also teach a few information literacy classes AND...a web2.0 class to sophomores!  I am really looking forward to it and spending time on 23things has now become all the more valuable.  Thanks for organizing and encouraging us to take part!

Have a blog set up through work, in initial stages so no one can view. Do i create a separate blog for 23 things, or piggyback on the one through work? How do my fellow SLA members view my progress of 23 things?

I am confused.  I created my test blog weeks ago and I created my de.licious account but for some reason I don't get how I tag and bookmark the blog so that it appears on 23 Things?  I just don't know what I am supposed to do where?  I am missing something obvious but I am dazed and confused.

The blog is for keeping track of your own progress. You can also leave short comments on various pages of tools you've really liked exploring. Bookmark your blog on your Del.icio.us account and tag as SLA23Things. If your blog is open, it will appear with everyone else's blog when that tag is clicked and/or in the RSS feed we set up on the right sidebar of the home page.

I am the ultimate sceptic and so far I have been unable to determine any real use for 2.0 either in my life or in my library, which is why I have joined 23 Things in case I am proved wrong. But I'm going to take some convincing, as at present I see all that twittering and blogging as a complete waste of my time!

BTW, I'd read that each step would require a commitment of only 15 minutes per day but I keep seeing statements like "1 hour" and even "2 hours." That kind-of stops me in my tracks a bit.

Remember: "The only constant is change" (Source: Heraclitus cited in Wikiquote). Web 2.0 is a natural evolution of the Internet. Based on my Web 2.0/3.0 research and many of the tools I've explored and the handful of tools I've put into practice, we are nearing the end of Web 2.0 and have already entered Web 3.0. So, Participants... remember to leave comments on the 23 Things modules about what you are learning, your key takeaways, what you plan to put into practice in your own library, and more! Let's learn together and share our ideas.

Anyone else having new-password-overload?  I keep signing in to new things in the course of the 23 Things program, and scribbling down the new IDs and passwords but never all in the same place.  I also find that I have to have several browser windows open concurrently to work through the 23 Things site, my blog and whatever tool I am using.  Otherwise I start following links and get lost.

Question - I signed up for 13 things rather than 23. But I don't see how to tel what they are. Also there are 9 weeks of lessons displaying at the top left. Will 4 more weeks be added, or do all 23 things occur in that 9-lesson timeframe?

The 23 Things are spread across 9 weeks. When you click on each week, you'll see how we've added the "Things." You can pick which 13 things you want to do but we recommend you complete the items listed within Weeks 1 and 2 since Week 1 offers some additional introductory information and Week 2 discusses setting up a blog to record your ideas.

During one of this week's challenges (adding a widget for my LibraryThings catalog), I found that I'm not sure "where" I'm supposed to paste the code into my blog to show up in the sidebar.  It would appear that I don't have the option to create a "new" widget (I'm using the free version of WordPress -- will I need to "upgrade to have this capability?).  Or, am I totally missing how to do this.  I found the WordPress FAQ less than helpful.

I'm finally getting back to working on SLA 23 Things. I blogged yesterday about Week 3: Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati, and tagged my post using SLA23Things. I have my blog bookmarked in delicious (publicly accessible) and have it tagged using SLA23Things. However, my blog doesn't appear in the the list nor does it appear on the 23 Things page here on the SLA site. Does anyone have a solution for this? My blog is at http://www.apexinformation.com/meldinme/ and my delicious feed is http://delicious.com/apexinfo. Thanks for any help you can provide.

OK, our Chapter President, Irene McMorland, has been pushing 23 Things at our meetings. So, here I am, starting out weeks after the original deadline, to see what this is all about. After attending the SLA Conference in Seattle in June, I quickly became a Second Life enthusiast and have been spending loads of time there. I even wrote an article that was published in Epoch Times newspaper! I'm ready to see which 23 things I have been missing out on.
